Mosquito Facts:
– There are over 60 different species of mosquitoes that are found in New Jersey, with some of the most common being Aedes vexans, Culex pipiens, and Anopheles.
– Although mosquitoes in NJ are most active during the summer months, from June to September when the temperatures are warm and humidity is high, they can be a problem as early as March and as late as November.
– Mosquitoes breed in standing water, such as ponds, pools, and even small puddles. A culex mosquito can lay as many as 300 eggs in the cap of a water bottle.
– In New Jersey, mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and Zika virus.
– Mosquitoes are attracted to people who produce more carbon dioxide and body heat, such as those who are physically active or pregnant. They are also attracted to certain scents, such as perfumes and scented lotions. Although the scientific studies are in disagreement on this, its also said that the food you eat can make you more or less attractive to mosquitoes.
– Mosquitoes can be difficult to control as they can breed in small amounts of standing water that may go unnoticed. In addition to larvicides, effective mosquito control programs may also use adulticides to kill adult mosquitoes. Keeping that in mind, these chemicals can also have negative impacts on other insects and the environment, so they are used sparingly and with caution by experts.
– While male mosquitoes feed on nectar and plant juices, female mosquitoes require a blood meal to produce eggs. After feeding, females can rest for several days before laying their eggs.
– To help control mosquito populations, NJ government agencies conduct regular mosquito surveillance and control programs on public land. This includes monitoring mosquito breeding sites and using larvicides to prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults.
