There’s been a lot of hype lately about the hand-sized Joro Spider (Trichonephila clavata) coming to New Jersey.
There is no need for alarm though. Although it is a big, scary looking spider, they are actually beneficial insects.
Joro spiders are an outdoor only spider. You’re probably not going to find one on your bedsheets unless you are in the doghouse with your spouse and sleeping in a tent in your backyard.

Joro spiders eat a plethora of insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, wasps, stink bugs and even spotted lanternflies. Anything that is dumb enough to fly into its web becomes dinner.

The news is saying that Joros are “Giant, flying, threatening spiders!!!”, but they actually don’t fly… they do what is called ballooning. In other words, they glide on their own strands of silk and float to the ground when necessary.

As with all spiders, Joro spiders are venomous. Despite their size, Joros are incredibly shy. They won’t bite unless someone / something is purposely provoking or cornering them. Even then, there is debate as to whether or not a Joro’s fangs are strong enough to actually pierce human skin. Entomologists report that rare Joro bites are akin to a regular bug bite in severity.

To sum it all up, yes, they look like a threat but they are actually little 8 legged teddy bears. I’m actually looking forward to having one on our house, if one feels so inclined to visit
